Shadows on Your Right Hand Comments, questions & Craig's responses to "A number of our Administrative Managers have contacted me and expressed how much they enjoyed Shadows on Your Right Hand. The common thread was your writings on prevention of stress and burnout-- the information alone was stress busters." "Shadows on Your Right Hand -- Wow! Your section on Safeguarding Your Dignity spoke directly to my situation…it made me realize that, in spite of being in a profession I love, I am being marginalized by my present employer. Nothing I ever do or suggest is even close to being good enough. One after another my ideas are just swept under the table. The chapter asked me to answer three questions: Am I somebody? Am I doing something worthwhile? Do I belong someplace? With my present employer I honestly must answer all three “NO”. Do you have any suggestions?" Author’s Comment: Being marginalized is what I believe to be the number one cancer "Your sense of humour allowed me to absorb the serious parts of the book that relate to my life in a light-hearted and entertaining manner. It is true what you said, What we learn with pleasure. . .we never forget. The book was a pleasure to read and to absorb." "At age 81 I am well into what your book calls The Season of Evening Shadows. "I am female and scored 73 on the Burnout Assessment Test. My high stressors are (1) rightness and goodness (2) easily conned (3) lack of rewards (4) close association at work with bottom-line listeners (5) being deflected from my goals, and (6) extreme agitation. Author’s Comment: The score of 73 is in the high range. At this point you need to be pro-active. You might like to ask your doctor to determine that the problem is not depression and/or anxiety, or some other cause. Then follow religiously the instructions in Chapter 14: Neutralizing Stress and Burnout Risks. Remember the key: Celebrate who you are, where you are, and how far you have come. Keep a record of the times you rose above each of these stressors. Completing our Personal Employment Evaluation Profile is another option." "I have always thought of myself as being ‘outside of the normal stream.’ In school I was diagnosed as having Attention Deficit Disorder. I start a new job with enthusiasm but end up being fired or quitting soon after. I know I’m smart and see things differently from others. Chapter 5: How We Think, really opened my eyes by showing me I’m an Adaptive Thinker. Again, I always knew I was different but until now unable to put a name on it. It’s like being let out of prison…I am what I am! And now I’m proud of it! Thanks." |
